Chapter 19

Later that night, Chris lay in bed with James’s head resting on his chest. James had fallen asleep, his breaths soft against Chris’s skin. He lightly stroked James’s back as he wondered if their future together would ever be peaceful.

Chris thought they were safe, but his gaze was on the French doors. Hopefully, the motion light wouldn’t come on. He tried to push away the thought, but even though the quiet offered sleep, he couldn’t shut off his mind. What if Skinner really was blackmailing Nolan? What else was Skinner up to?

James placed his hand on Chris’s chest as he cleared his throat. “Can’t sleep?” James said softly, then lightly kissed Chris’s chest.

“Did I wake you?”

“No,” James said as he put his head on the pillow. “Something bothering you?”

“Not really.”

James brushed his fingers against Chris’s cheek. “Even in the darkness, I can tell you’re lying.”

Chris smiled.

James placed his hand flat over Chris’s heart. “Tell me.”

Chris said, “Kedlin said there was corruption in the Darton investigation, and that it was happening again.”

“Kedlin talk to you?”

“No, just…it’s a theory.”

“Whose theory?”

Chris caught his breath. “Ours.”

“You mean Dylan and Ron’s.”

“Is it true?”

James took a deep breath and then slowly let it out.

“Is it?”

“Something has been bothering me since you and I went looking for Charles Garoutte that day,” James said. “I told the department I was going there, and Dorsey just happened to pick that day to break in and attack the woman who lived there?”

“You think someone told him you’d be there?”

James said, “What if it wasn’t just a coincidence?”

“What about Skinner?”

“What about him?”

Chris hesitated. “You two are the lead investigators. What if he’s the one Kedlin suspects?”

James chuckled. “I wouldn’t believe it.”

“What if someone on your team is crooked?”

“Do you know something?”

“No,” Chris said. “I’m just worried about you.”

“I’ve worked with these guys for several years.”

“But there’s someone you don’t trust.”

James sighed. “I’m not sure. Like I said, it bothers me.”

Chris stroked James’s shoulder. “It bothers me, too.”

“If something is going on, I want to know about it.”

“I’m just not sure who we can trust.”

James propped himself on his left arm and caressed Chris’s cheek with his thumb. “I want you to keep the tracker,” James said. “I’ll make sure I’m the only one who knows about it, but I’d feel better knowing I could find you if I need to.”

“Okay.”

“I promise I won’t spy on you.”

Chris softly laughed. “I’ll tell you if I leave town again.”

James rolled onto his back and opened his arms, then Chris put his head on his shoulder, draping his arm over James’s chest. They laid in silence for several moments while James rubbed Chris’s back.

James whispered, “Try to get some sleep.”

Chris tucked his head into James’s neck, closing his eyes as James tightened his hold. It felt good to have James back. Chris could almost forget the danger, but his concerns still lingered. With James having his own doubts about his department, maybe Dylan and Ron were right to not trust the police.

James kissed the top of his head and Chris smiled.
